Training
An EMT certification class consists of 150-170 hours of classroom time and a written and psychomotor exam.
EMTs are required to become certified through the Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board and nationally registered through the National Registry of EMTs. Crew members are also required to become certified emergency vehicle operators.
A SGA EMT must have monthly continuing education to keep their skills fresh and to recertify every two years.
History of Spring Grove Ambulance
Prior to 1970, the Spring Grove Ambulance was run by Gordon Roble of Roble Funeral Home. He ran the service out of a 1964 Oldsmobile Station Wagon that was equipped with oxygen and basic first aid equipment.
Since that time, there have been several ambulances purchased. Our current rig is a 2017 Ford and is equipped with standard equipment plus some specialty equipment that the service requires variances to carry. This allows EMTs to provide more extensive treatments and procedures than other basic services can provide.
In 1974, the townships of Spring Grove, Blackhammer, and Wilmington along with the City of Spring Grove incorporated the ambulance service. At this time a Board was appointed consisting of one member from each township, and 2 members from the City. This is the same system that is still in use today.
Today the crew is comprised of 7 volunteer EMTs and two EMR’s. The crew members are required to attend monthly trainings to keep up their skills and license. The service is always looking for interested community members to join the crew! Contact the Director for more information.
